Job Description
Thesis Topic
This thesis will develop a coupled and distributed glacio-hydrological modeling framework
, combining physical glacier modeling and physics-informed machine learning via differentiable programming (Universal Differential Equations). Building on the ODINN.jl glacier model, the PhD candidate will improve ice thickness inversions and
future glacier projections in the Alps and Andes by integrating heterogeneous datasets (surface velocities, radar thicknesses, mass balances, DEMs). ODINN.jl will then be coupled to a differentiable hydrological model calibrated using an LSTM to simulate glacial flow and its downstream hydrological impact.
Your Work Environment
Glacio-hydrological models are essential for translating climate projections into actionable information about water resources, particularly in high mountain regions where glacial melt significantly influences river flow. However, existing models often lack the resolution and physical detail needed to accurately represent key glacial processes at the watershed scale.
