Offer Description
The Project
The ELEGANT 2.0 project aims to develop a bioelectrochemical process for the removal of nitrate from groundwater. The DVGW Research Centre TUHH subproject focuses on the selection of suitable electrode materials and the optimization of the process, taking the underlying microbiological processes into account. In a subsequent step, the process will be tested and evaluated at pilot scale with a view to its application in drinking water treatment.
Your Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a bioelectrochemical laboratory reactor for nitrate reduction (electrified dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium – eDNRA)
- Design and optimize reactor experiments using statistical methods, e.g. Response Surface Methodology (RSM)
- Coordinate organizational and scientific communication with the project partners involved
- Upscale the system and evaluate its suitability for application in drinking water treatment
- Supervise student projects (Bachelor’s, research, and Master’s theses)
- Analyze, document, and present project results in German and English
- Publish research findings, including in English-language scientific journals

- An excellent university degree (PhD, if applicable) in environmental or process/bioprocess engineering (with a focus on water), chemical engineering, microbiology, biotechnology, or a related field
- A strong interest in further academic qualification / pursuing a PhD, as well as a keen interest in scientific questions related to water
- Experience and aptitude in experimental setup, practical laboratory work, handling biological systems, and analytical methods
- Excellent self-management skills and a high degree of accuracy
- Excellent communication and writing skills in both German and English
- Strong organizational skills, an innovative mindset, and creativity
Additional Information
Benefits
We offer a varied, scientifically oriented position with a high degree of autonomy. You will have the opportunity to further develop your expertise in water treatment and microbiology.
As part of the project, you will collaborate with two other research institutions: the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (Department of Environmental Microbiology) and the Institute of Technical Microbiology at TUHH. A specialized laboratory and pilot plant facility are available for the project. We also offer the opportunity to pursue a PhD.
The DVGW promotes the employment of women at all levels and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply. We support the reconciliation of work and family life.
