Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering

Applications are invited for a full-time position as an Assistant Professor in Environmental Engineering at the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering, School of Engineering and Natural Sciences, University of Iceland. The department’s goal is to strengthen studies and research in engineering methods that contribute to a sustainable society. The new Assistant Professor is intended to lead teaching and research in the field of hydraulic engineering and renewable energy engineering. Special emphasis is placed on the following areas of expertise: Hydrology and/or fluid mechanics in cold climates, utilization of hydro, wind and/or tidal energy, large datasets such as climate models and satellite data, water and energy infrastructure. The Assistant Professor is based at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík. According to the rules of the University of Iceland, the duties of a teacher are divided into three main areas: research, teaching and management.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Build internationally recognized research, publish peer-reviewed scientific articles, obtain external research grants, and actively participate in international projects and collaborations.
Build master’s and doctoral programs in the field and mentor graduate students in environmental and civil engineering.
Develop, teach, and supervise undergraduate and graduate courses.
Work in academic service and administrative positions.

Qualification requirements

Doctoral degree in environmental and/or civil engineering.
Experience in university teaching.
Experience in course planning, practical teaching, and supervising final projects at the university level is desirable.
Research activity in the field of study, which is reflected, among other things, in publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience in obtaining grants for research work is an advantage.
Experience in participating in international research projects is an advantage.
Expertise in cold climates, natural hazards, and the built environment is desirable.
Good collaboration skills and agility in interpersonal relationships.
Good written and spoken English skills.
Ability to teach in Icelandic is an advantage. It is required that within four years of employment, B1 level has been achieved. The University of Iceland offers assistance in acquiring the necessary language skills.

The applicant must be able to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Higher Education, Industry and Innovation for the legalization of the professional title of engineer and receive a license for the professional title within one year of starting work.

When hiring, it will be assumed that the person who is awarded the position will best fit the circumstances and needs of the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering.

Salaries according to the current collective agreement concluded between the Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Association of University Teachers.

Work is expected to begin no later than August 1, 2027.

The appointment will be for a period of five years, with the possibility of permanent appointment after that period, cf. Paragraph 3 of Article 31 of the University of Iceland Regulations No. 569/2009.
