We’re looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Junior Hydrogeologist to join our growing team. You’ll get hands-on experience with groundwater modelling, environmental assessments, and hydrogeological conceptualisation, across the water resources, mining and humanitarian sectors.
Whether you’re just starting out or already have a few years’ experience, you’ll receive the mentoring, training and support to develop further.
Who Are We?
Groundwater Science is a specialist hydrogeological and environmental consultancy. In recent years, we’ve worked on projects in West Africa, the Caribbean, South Asia and Europe. We’re known for our innovative approach, frequently developing tools and approaches that are later adopted by the wider community.
We take the technical side seriously, but not at the expense of being a decent, supportive place to work. We’re spread across Shrewsbury, London, High Wycombe, Edinburgh and Glasgow but that doesn’t stop us getting together regularly, both for work and for fun. What Will You Do?
As a Junior Hydrogeologist, you’ll help deliver a wide variety of hydrogeological projects, combining office-based technical analysis with (optional) occasional field investigations. You’ll support senior hydrogeologists by:
Technical Analysis
- Processing hydrogeological and climate datasets
- Developing conceptual hydrogeological models
- Analysing monitoring data and long-term trends
- Supporting groundwater resource and impact assessments
- Assisting with recharge and water balance studies
- Supporting numerical groundwater modelling
Reporting & Project Support
- Preparing technical reports, figures and data summaries
- Supporting environmental assessments and permit applications
- Managing allocated tasks to programme and budget
- Liaising with contractors and supporting client meetings
- Maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance
Field Investigations
- Groundwater and surface water monitoring and sampling
- Supervising drilling contractors and borehole installations
- Undertaking aquifer testing, including pumping and slug tests
- Undertaking site inspections and hydrogeological walkovers
- Logging geological strata and maintaining accurate field records
About You
We’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic and eager to learn, with a curiosity that can survive fieldwork in the rain and the occasional Excel crash.
You’ll need:
- BSc in Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences or a related discipline
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Good numerical ability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Right to work in the UK
Nice to have:
- MSc in Hydrogeology (preferred but not essential)
- Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS
- Familiarity with groundwater modelling software such as MODFLOW
- Experience processing environmental monitoring data
- Knowledge of UK hydrogeology and groundwater legislation
- Programming experience (Python, R or similar)
- Experience with databases or data visualisation tools
- Membership of, or intention to join, the Geological Society or CIWEM
- Willingness to undertake occasional fieldwork across the UK or abroad
