The Quantitative Fisheries Center (QFC) at Michigan State University is hiring a fixed-term Assistant Professor in fishery stock assessment. This will be a full-time, 12-month position focused on building stock assessment training and capacity for Great Lakes agencies. Training courses and workshops can include courses on RTMB and maximum likelihood estimation, fish population dynamics, stock assessment methodology, and harvest policy evaluation. This includes the bi-nationally managed Lake Erie walleye and yellow perch fisheries, valued at more than $1 billion/year. This work carries meaningful research opportunities throughout, including state-space and hierarchical assessment frameworks and simulation-based evaluation of harvest policies.
Salary is $100k – $125k (depending on experience), plus benefits, with an anticipated January 2027 start in East Lansing, MI (starting date can be negotiated). This is a fixed-term position with annual renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance and continued support from Great Lakes fishery agencies.
