Why does the job exist?
The Senior Water Resources Professional position within the Reuse Team of the Ground Water Quality Bureau exists to protect and restore New Mexico’s groundwater resources for the benefit of all citizens. This position oversees groundwater discharge permits, reviews discharge permit applications, drafts permits, inspects facilities, oversees corrective actions and abatement, prepares testimony, serves as an expert regarding water quality issues related to discharge permits, and assists in tasks related to the advancement of water reuse in the state of New Mexico.
How does it get done?
– Conducting analytical reviews of historic and current technical reports related to groundwater permitting and closure.
– Overseeing groundwater discharge permits including reviewing applications, drafting permits, overseeing corrective actions and abatement.
– Preparing testimony and serving as an expert for the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) regarding water quality issues related to discharge permits administered under the New Mexico Water Quality Act and Water Quality Control Commission Regulations.
– Conducting routine and compliance inspections, sample collection, investigations and other projects generally in rural outdoor settings and in all types of weather conditions.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
– Permit writing – or other regulatory oversight experience
– Environmental sampling and analysis
– Producing clear, effective written and verbal communication
– Collaborating with staff and permittees to achieve regulatory goals
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and four (4) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Work is also performed in a field setting in predominately rural areas throughout the state. The position requires the ability to lift and carry 25 pounds and to walk on uneven ground surfaces in all types of weather conditions. This distribution will vary throughout the year and with the needs of the assigned tasks. Travel in-state and possibly out of state will be required.
