Offer Description
We are opening the call for applications for 3 research fellowships as part of the
DELTA-HUB project, 2026 edition( car 118PHE/2025) . Fellows will carry out, for a period of 12 calendar months
(October 2026 – September 2027), research and support activities associated with the DELTA-HUB project—http://delta-hub.unibuc.ro/—and will receive mentorship from project researchers throughout the duration of the fellowship.

Skills/Qualifications
Fellowship 1:
- GIS Operations (ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Satellite image processing (Google Earth Engine, SNAP)
- Basic knowledge of hydraulics/hydrology
- Willingness to learn hydrodynamic modeling software (TUFLOW FV, Delft3D, MIKE)
- Previous experience with Python scripting or RStudio is an advantage
for the scholarship.
Fellowship 2:
- GIS and working with raster/vector data and projection systems
- Time-series analysis and basic statistics (Python, R, or MATLAB)
- Interest in coastal geomorphology and wave modeling (SWAN, Delft3D)
Fellowship 3:
- Basic and intermediate skills in: ArcGIS, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro
- Graphic design skills and experience with design, visualization, and graphics editing software:
Inkscape or equivalent - Skills in working with geographic data: Google Earth Pro, management of
simple spatial databases. - Basic knowledge of web programming or scripting (JavaScript, Python)
- Geographic data processing and spatial representation
- Proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Familiarity with Unity/Unreal or other 3D/VR environments is a plus.
Specific Requirements
Fellowship 1:
- Assessment of current conditions and hydrological reconnection scenarios in one of
the largest agricultural areas proposed for renaturation - Multitemporal analysis of satellite imagery (Sentinel-1/2, Landsat) to examine the dynamics
of water bodies, vegetation, and floodplain areas - Preparation of input data for the model: bathymetry, topography, roughness, and
boundary conditions (discharges, water levels) - Running and analyzing hydrodynamic modeling scenarios regarding the reconnection
of the area (circulation, residence time, water levels) - Interpretation of results from the perspective of restoration solutions and the transport of
sediments and nutrients
Fellowship 2:
- Reconstructing the evolution of the submerged profile of the deltaic shoreline and its relationship to wave conditions and changes in the shoreline.
- Compiling and harmonizing historical bathymetric maps and surveys into a comparable dataset
(georeferencing, datum corrections, GIS). - Quantification of erosion and accretion along profiles and over the surface (rates of change,
sediment budgets, mobility of submerged bars). - Modeling of wave climate and coastal sediment transport based on available
wind/wave time series. - Correlation of shoreface dynamics with shoreline evolution derived from
satellite imagery.
Fellowship 3:
- Transforming geospatial datasets and modeling results into visual materials
accessible to the general public and decision-makers. - Creating interactive maps and infographics (web-GIS, StoryMaps, dashboards)
based on satellite data and modeling results. - Creating 3D scenes and animations of the deltaic and coastal terrain (digital
terrain models, bathymetry, drone imagery). - Prototyping a VR/immersive experience for exploring the Danube Delta and its
- Developing a unified set of graphic guidelines (color palette, symbols, typography) for
the team’s outreach materials.
Additional Information
Benefits
The DELTA-HUB research fellowship amounts to 1,750 lei per month. In addition, fellowship recipients may be reimbursed for fieldwork travel expenses or for participating in national and International academic conferences with scientific papers. The fellowship is awarded regardless of whether the undergraduate or graduate student already receives other scholarships or forms of financial aid from the University of Bucharest or other organizations.
Eligibility criteria
- A student enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s degree program at the University of
Bucharest; - Advanced research skills, academic writing, independent study, and teamwork;
- Excellent knowledge of English (for use in an academic context);
Selection process
Interested individuals are asked to submit the following documents by September 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., to delta.hub@geo.unibuc.ro:
● Resume (in English);
● Letter of intent (in English; max. 2 pages) specifying which of the 3 available scholarships they are applying for from among the 3 available;
● A proposal (in English) for a research idea on topics within the scope of the project associated with each of the 3 fellowships; the idea is to be developed over the 12-month duration of the fellowship. The proposal, in the form of an, shall be no longer than 1,000 words and shall include: a presentation of the idea, its grounding in the literature, research methods, and its contribution within
the broader context of the subject area. A maximum of 30 bibliographic references (the most relevant ones) shall be listed—in addition to the 1,000-word limit.
Additional comments
Fellowship Recipients’ Responsibilities:
– to develop a research proposal on topics related to the DELTA- HUB project during the 12-month fellowship period;
– carrying out support activities related to the DELTA-HUB project, including occasional participation in project team meetings (depending on the preference stated in the letter of intent);
– committing to 20 hours per week for activities specific to the fellowship.
