Are you a recent graduate or at the start of your career looking to work on one of the greatest societal challenges of our time? Do you have a broad interest in climate change, water, the living environment, and societal resilience? And do you want to contribute to knowledge and solutions that enable the Netherlands and other deltas to better prepare for a changing climate? Then we are looking for you.
This is what you can expect as a junior climate adaptation researcher.
Within the Climate Adaptation department, we work on issues surrounding climate risks, adaptation strategies, and the design of a future-proof living environment. We investigate how governments, businesses, and civil society organizations can prepare for more extreme weather, sea level rise, floods, drought, and other climate-related challenges.
As a junior climate adaptation researcher, you will strengthen an interdisciplinary team working on national and international research and consultancy projects. You will contribute to the development and application of knowledge for policy, decision-making, and practice. In doing so, you will collaborate with colleagues from various disciplines, such as water management, spatial planning, governance, economics, data analysis, modeling, and social sciences.
Your duties are diverse. In doing so, you will learn how applied research is used to translate complex climate issues into practical and strategic solutions. Your workday might consist of, for example:
- analyzing scientific literature or policy documents, but also, for example, model outcomes or other quantitative data;
- developing climate adaptation strategies, adaptation pathways, and solution spaces for various areas and sectors;
- writing reports and creating presentations to share research questions, methods, and outcomes;
- organizing workshops and meetings to share or acquire knowledge.
What do we expect from you as a junior climate adaptation researcher?
You are a newcomer to the job market or a recent graduate. Therefore, you do not need to be a specialist yet. We are primarily looking for someone with a broad perspective who is analytical, curious, and motivated to further develop within the domain of climate adaptation. Additionally, you enjoy working in interdisciplinary teams. Furthermore, we require:
- An MSc in, for example: climate science, environmental science, water management, earth science, social geography, or a similar field. An interdisciplinary background is particularly welcome.
- You find it interesting to connect technical, policy, and societal perspectives .
- Experience with the following themes is a plus: water management, policy analysis, data analysis in, for example, Python or R.
- You possess strong communication skills in Dutch and English, both verbal and written. You can structure complex information and articulate it clearly, for colleagues as well as for clients and other stakeholders.
