Scholarship Theme: Operational decision-support in multi-purpose hydroelectric schemes
Duration: 3 months
Maximum Duration Including Renewals: 12 months
Objectives
The proposed research has the following objectives:
– Collection and cataloguing of meteorological, hydrometric, hydraulic, and operational data, for example, hydroelectric
production, water consumption, etc.
– Systematization of components and improvement of the overall architecture of a decision-support – system that
accounts for uncertainty.
– Verification, testing, and documentation of the tool.
– Publication of scientific papers.
The case study will be the Vesdre River, in Belgium, which is partially controlled by the Eupen and Gileppe dams and
where the 2021 floods has disastrous effects.
Work Plan
The activity will be divided as follows:
– Literature review.
– Development of technical and scientific skills.
– Data acquisition and processing.
– Programming and modelling.
– System testing.
– Publication of articles.
– Preparation of documentation and representation.

Selection process
Contest Evaluation Method(s)
Curricular evaluation weighted to 50% on a scale of 20 points with a minimum of 14 points needed for admission.
Individual interview weighted to 50% on a scale of 20 points with a minimum of 16 points needed for admission.
The minimum final grade needed for admission is 16 points.
Conditions for the Contest Evaluation
– Curricular evaluation: undergraduate degree average – 30%; average grade in the following course units, or equivalent:Hydrology and Water Resources – 10%, Probability and Statistics – 5%, and Programming – 5%.- Individual interview – 50%. Emphasis will be placed on the skills required to carry out the research, namely uncertainty,hydrology, water resources, risk, energy, command of English, transferable skills, and programming. The interview will beconducted either in person or online.
