Scientific Position (PhD or Postdoctoral level) (m/f/d)
(Position number: 24-2026 Researcher Migration)
in the field of climate change and human migration, starting on the earliest possible date.
The position will be filled either at PhD or postdoctoral level, depending on qualifications. Postdoctoral positions are funded for up to 2 years, PhD positions for 3 years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E13 (75% PhD position, 100% postdoctoral level). This is a full-time position with a working time of 40 hours per week. The position can be filled on a part-time basis.
Background: This working group studies the links between climate change and human mobility. An improved, quantitative understanding of migration patterns and dynamics, independent of climate, is essential, since existing models poorly explain observed trends and variations in migration flows. Using recent advances in migration data, the successful candidate will develop conceptual and quantitative models of migration or displacement, with a focus on separating spatial patterns from temporal dynamics, to improve understanding and predictive capacity related to either. The work will contribute to the EU-funded projects TipESM and FUTURA, and successful candidates may be involved in project meetings and further project-related activities.
Key responsibilities:
- conceive, design, and conduct quantitative research on human migration
- develop and test new approaches explaining observed temporal variations and trends in internal and/or international migration
- building on state-of-the-art econometric and/or system dynamics modeling approaches and recent migration data sources
- investigate links between such variations or trends and global climate change, e.g., through direct estimation of environmental drivers, or attribution of changes in non-environmental drivers to climate change
- publish the results of the research in peer-reviewed journals
- present research findings at conferences and workshops
Requirements:
- a PhD (for Postdoctoral position) or M.Sc. (for PhD position) in a relevant field, such as economics, geography, climate sciences, physics or mathematics
- experience in quantitative research, documented by relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals (for PhD position, other written contributions, such as theses or draft manuscripts, may be acceptable)
