Why does the job exist?
The purpose of this position is to support the delivery of reliable, safe, and sustainable drinking water by public water systems in New Mexico. This position will be responsible for assisting in the development of Source Water Protection Plans and Assessments related to drinking water contaminants. Through research, source water quality sampling, data analysis, and the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software, this position will collaborate with the NMED Drinking Water Bureau – Source Water Protection Team and other programs to develop high-quality datasets that support the development of needs assessments, risk analysis, and contaminant inventories to evaluate regulated drinking water systems to support regulatory compliance and protection of public health.
How does it get done?
– Provide technical assistance and training for public water systems and their communities throughout the state related to Source Water Protection planning and contaminant mitigation
– Evaluate water quality data trends and integrity, including analytical quality control data
– Collect and assist in the collection of source water quality samples for baseline analysis
– Utilize GIS software and analyze data developed internally and by external entities
– Develop and update outreach materials in the forms of presentations, brochures, and guidance documents
– Use a variety of communication methods including phone, email, and virtual meeting platforms
– Working closely with the Source Water Protection Team Lead, Team members, contractor staff, and numerous external stakeholders

– Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
– Great interpersonal and communication skills across a variety of communication mediums, including but not limited to in-person and virtual training experiences
– Evaluating data integrity and performing in-depth analysis to prepare technically complex water resources reports and maps
– Strong technical writing, research, and GIS skills
– Field, particularly sample collection and mapping, and familiarity with analytical data for water quality samples
– Current possession of or ability to acquire Water Sample Tech (WST2) certification from the NMED Utility Operators Certification Program within 6 months of hire is preferable
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Science, Hydrology, Geology, Environmental Science, Water Resources, Watershed Management, Physics, Natural Science, Physical Science, Life Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Forestry/Forest Science, Conservation Science, Wildlife Science, Emergency Management, or Engineering and two (2) years of relevant experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver’s License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some in-state and out-of-state travel may be required, as well as fieldwork to collect water quality samples from public water systems throughout the state.
