PhD Candidate in Hydroinformatics – Long-Term Planning Under Uncertainty for Resilient Water Infrastructure

The PhD candidate will develop an integrated framework for long-term planning of critical drinking-water infrastructure towards 2060 under deep uncertainty. The research will combine resilience, robustness, flexibility, sustainability and system intelligence, linking hydraulic and digital-twin models with optimisation and decision-support methods and validating the framework using a real water-utility case.

Skills/Qualifications

Experience with long-term infrastructure planning, multi-objective, robust or stochastic optimisation, uncertainty analysis, digital twins, data science or machine learning is desirable. Candidates should demonstrate systems thinking, analytical and programming ability, independent research capacity, scientific communication skills and a collaborative and proactive attitude.

A relevant Master’s degree in Hydroinformatics, civil or environmental engineering, water engineering, applied mathematics, operations research, computer science or a related field. Applicants should have knowledge of hydraulics, water-distribution-system modelling, optimisation and programming in Python, as well as strong written and spoken English. 

Specific Requirements

Candidates must comply with all applicable eligibility requirements and regulations of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Networks programme.

Doctoral Status: Applicants must not possess a doctoral degree at the date of recruitment.

Mobility Rule: Applicants must comply with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) mobility rule. At the date of recruitment, candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding the recruitment date. Short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
