The Global Rivers Group at Virginia Tech is recruiting a 2-year research postdoc with a start date between September 2026 and May 2027.
The Global Rivers Group is a productive and collaborative team in the Department of Geosciences at Virginia Tech. We use satellite observations and models to study the Earth’s inland surface waters. The postdoc will have the flexibility to develop their own research program while also contributing to several ongoing Global Rivers Group projects. Potential research projects include but are not limited to the following:
- Satellite remote sensing of inland surface water including analysis of data from the SWOT and NISAR satellite missions
- Development of global-scale geospatial datasets focused on hydrology/aquatic systems
- Applications of geospatial foundation models, long short-term memory (LSTM) networks, or other AI/ML approaches for hydrologic systems.
The postdoc will receive mentorship and/or formal training in grant proposal writing, publishing and presenting, and preparation for securing a permanent position. The position comes with a competitive salary, benefits, and support for conference travel. The appointment is for at least two years, contingent on satisfactory progress and available funding.
The position requires that candidates earn their doctoral degree within five years prior to the start date. Candidates should possess a demonstrated ability to communicate scientific findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations. Desirable (but not required) qualifications include proficiency with GIS/remote sensing, scientific programming, high-performance computing (HPC), AI/ML methods, and/or geospatial foundation models.
