Your role as a Scientific Software Engineer
You will join the Preprocessing team, responsible for developing the tools and workflows used to build and prepare schematizations for surface water, groundwater, and water management applications.
Our software transforms complex data into simulation-ready models and supports researchers and water professionals in understanding and managing water systems. In this role, you will operate at the intersection of water science and software engineering. You will work closely with hydrologists, water management specialists, and fellow software engineers to develop solutions that are scientifically sound, scalable, and maintainable.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain Python applications and tools for model building and model preprocessing.
- Translate hydrological and water management concepts into robust and user-friendly software solutions.
- Collaborate with researchers and domain experts to improve modelling workflows and research tools.
- Contribute to the development of automated data processing and model generation pipelines.
- Safeguard software quality through testing, code reviews, documentation, and development best practices.
- Improve the maintainability, performance, and usability of software used across Deltares.
- Support the implementation of new scientific methods within operational software tools.
Key qualifications
We are looking for a professional who combines software engineering expertise with a solid understanding of water systems. You understand how hydrological and water management models are built and used, and you can translate that understanding into high-quality software that supports researchers and water professionals. In addition, we require:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Hydrology, Water Management, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- At least 3-4 years of relevant professional experience.
- Strong software development skills in Python and experience building data-driven applications.
- Proven domain knowledge of hydrology, groundwater or surface water.
- Ability to translate water management concepts and modelling requirements into robust software solutions.
- Experience with software engineering best practices, including testing, documentation, version control, code reviews, and CI/CD.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both software engineers and water-domain specialists.

- Deltares offers a contract (32 hours minimum) for 12 months with the intention of a contract for an indefinite period of time. Salary will be based on your experience €4253 - € 7.089, - gross per month based on 40 hours per week.
