Offer Description
The Research Unit of the University of the Aegean seeks to appoint a Forester or/and Environmental Scientist (R3-PhD) with research capacity in operation and monitoring of pilot-scale wastewater treatment systems (affiliation with the University of the Aegean, Water and Air Quality Laboratory).
The selected individual will participate in a project funded by the EU entitled “Decentralized solutions for a circular and efficient water management – from demonstration to the market”, with the acronym “DECIRE-WATER” and project number: 101182154. The project will provide sustainable decentralised systems, designed to function independently or integrated with centralized infrastructure, predominantly based on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) but also incorporating technical processes. We are looking for a talented Forester or/and Environmental Scientist interested in the use of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for greywater treatment. The researcher will have the opportunity to:
– Become a member of a European project implementing at pilot- scale NbS for greywater treatment.
– Participate in the operation and monitoring of a pilot-systems that has been installed in Molyvos village (Lesvos Island, Greece) aiming to the treatment of greywater produced in a hotel

Skills/Qualifications
Applicants must have a Bachelor degree or equivalent in Forestry or/and Environmental Science and a Master degree or equivalent in Ecological Engineering. The applicant should have experience on the collection and analysis of wastewater samples and on the operation and monitoring of waste/wastewater treatment systems.
Specific Requirements
- Previous participation in funded research projects
- Presentations at international conferences in the relevant research field
- Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the relevant research field
- Experience on collecting water/wastewater samples, in the application of different biological technologies for waste and wastewater and on the operation of pilot-scale biological treatment systems
- Excellent oral and written skills in English language

Contract Duration

Flexible Work location
- The selected candidate will offer services as needed at University facilities (Mytilene, Lesvos), upon agreement with the supervisor (Principal Investigator). The project requires in person work in the Water and Air Quality Laboratory and in-person participation in project and Lab meetings.
Allocated budget
- Range of hourly rate: 30-40 euros/hour. Depends on experience and qualifications (incl. tax and social security) .The maximum allocated budget is: 16,800€ (gross, including tax and social security contributions).

Selection process
The assessment of the curriculum evaluation will be based on the documents applicants will provide. In case an interview will be needed, applicants will be invited to participate via teleconference.
The selection criteria for candidates will take into account their qualifications and previous research experience, including qualifications and experience obtained in non-standard and informal ways (as presented in the submitted application documents). UAegean focuses on cultivating a research community that advances gender equality, ends all forms of discrimination, and empowers women researchers.
Applications will be evaluated by an Evaluation Committee composed of three (3) UAegean professors from different academic departments (gender balanced, chaired by the project’s Principal Investigator). Applicants that do not fulfill the required qualifications will be excluded from the evaluation process.
After evaluation, applicants will receive a notification email with a short summary of the evaluation report. Applicants who were not selected have the right to appeal the selection decision, by addressing their written objection to the University of the Aegean Research Unit Secretariat within five days from the notification date (via email sent to rcs@aegean.gr). The permanent Committee for Appeals and Objections, which is supported by a member of the UAegean RU Secretariat, will review the process and issue advice to the UAegean Research Committee on letters of objection submitted by the non-selected applicants. The Research Committee will receive the advice of the Committee for Appeals and Objections and take a decision on the objection (process defined by the Greek Law, 4957/2022, article 245).
