Offer Description
The Department of Inorganic Chemistry, in collaboration with the Department of and Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the University of Granada, is seeking highly motivated candidates for a funded PhD position within the research project OXIFES (Combination of hybrid photo-electro oxidation processes through a novel device for sustainable water reuse), funded by the Regional Government of Andalusia (Project Ref. P24_00628).
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of innovative advanced oxidation technologies for the removal of emerging chemical contaminants and pathogenic microorganisms from wastewater, promoting its safe and sustainable reuse in accordance with current European regulations.
Research topic
The PhD project focuses on advanced water treatment technologies combining photo-assisted and electrochemical oxidation processes for:
• Removal of emerging contaminants (e.g. pharmaceuticals) from water.
• Water disinfection and pathogen inactivation.
• Development and application of catalytic materials.
• Analytical monitoring of chemical contaminants.
• Microbiological and molecular biology analyses.
• Sustainable water reuse technologies.

Skills/Qualifications
Essential and desirable qualifications
Given the 30-month duration of the PhD contract, applicants are expected to join the project with previous hands-on research experience and practical laboratory skills. The successful candidate should be able to start experimental work with minimal initial training.
Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Analytical chemistry.
• Instrumental analysis, particularly chromatographic techniques for the determination of pharmaceuticals and other emerging contaminants in water.
• Environmental chemistry.
• Synthesis and application of catalytic materials for environmental remediation.
• Microbiological analysis.
• Molecular biology techniques.
• Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and international quality standards.
Applicants should also demonstrate:
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Spanish language proficiency.
• Willingness to undertake several international research stays during the PhD.
Specific Requirements
Applicants must already hold:
• A Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology or Environmental Engineering.
• A completed official University Master’s degree (or equivalent that grants access to PhD studies) in a relevant field before the starting date of the contract. Due to the limited duration of the PhD project (30 months), candidates who are still completing their Master’s degree will not be considered.
• Previous research experience in environmental technologies, preferably related to chemical water treatment, is strongly desirable.

• Position: Full-time Research Contract (PhD candidate).
• Starting date: 15 October 2026.
• Duration: 30 months (permanent employment contract linked to project funding).
• Gross salary: €1,850 per month.
• Host institution: Department of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Granada, Spain.
Eligibility criteria
Candidates will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
40%: Academic record (Grade Point Average, GPA) obtained in the Bachelor’s degree or Engineering degree.
60%: Relevant academic training and documented professional and/or research experience related to the position.
