EPSCoR Graduate Fellowship Program (EGFP): Graduate Experiences for Future Leaders: Building Workforce Capacity in Resource Management and Mining
Overview
We are seeking applicants for EPSCoR Graduate Fellowships (EGFP) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in the discipline of Geoscience. This opportunity is open to all Geoscience topics, however successful applicants will have research interests aligned with faculty expertise. EGFP applications should be submitted prior to graduate admissions deadlines for either the Fall (January 15th), or Spring (October 1st) semesters. The NSF EPSCoR Graduate Fellowship Program (EGFP) provides an opportunity for applicants who received the distinction of GRFP Honorable Mention no more than three years before the admission due date to be named NSF EPSCoR Graduate Fellows. Up to 15 Geoscience Fellowships will be awarded. Applications are currently being accepted for Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Fall 2027. The Fellowship stipend is $37,000 for 4 years, and includes a tuition and fee waiver. Fellows have 5 years to utilize their support.
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Department of Geoscience has a strong international reputation for both laboratory- and fieldbased education, and includes faculty working on a broad range of topics including geochemistry, economic geology, structural geology, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, geochronology, planetary geology, hydrology, sedimentology, paleontology, and paleoclimatology. UNLV is located at the Geo-heart of the nation with breathtaking geology in Nevada and surrounding states, and rich mineral resources (gold, silver, and lithium), all within driving distance. This provides a unique opportunity for field-based geological training and research. The Department also has numerous cutting-edge advanced instrumentation facilities which allow the integration of field and laboratory research. The Department offers both an MS and a PhD in Geoscience, and applicants are not required to take the GRE.
Eligibility Requirements
Eligibility: Must have the distinction of receiving an Honorable Mention from the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) no more than three years before accepting this Fellowship. Interested students that have not applied for the GRFP are encouraged to do so, and may apply if they receive an Honorable Mention.
Strong Candidates: Successful applicants will have research interests that align with faculty in the Department of Geoscience. They will also have academic achievements, attributes, and experiences that demonstrate potential for significant research contributions, a passion and motivation for a STEM career, and evidence of leadership potential, initiative, and the ability to work well with others.
UNLV Admission Requirements: A Bachelor’s or MS degree in Geoscience or related field, minimum overall GPA of 3.0. Only successful applicants will be required to apply for admission to UNLV.
