Surface Water / Hydrology Specialist
Environment & Sustainability Vertical

CUBE – Centre for Urbanization, Buildings & Environment, IIT Madras Research Park, invites applications for Surface Water / Hydrology Specialists to support projects in urban flooding, stormwater drainage, watershed studies, hydrologic / hydraulic modelling, climate resilience and environmental engineering.

Qualification & Experience

  • B.E. / B.Tech in Civil / Environmental Engineering with M.E. / M.Tech in Water Resources / Hydrology / Environmental Engineering.
  • 5–8 years of relevant experience in surface water, drainage, stormwater, flood modelling, watershed or urban water management projects.
  • Working knowledge of H&H modelling tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, MIKE, InfoWorks or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in GIS tools such as ArcGIS / QGIS for catchment mapping, drainage network mapping and spatial analysis.
  • Strong reporting, presentation, communication and documentation skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake hydrologic and hydraulic studies, including rainfall analysis, runoff estimation, peak-flow assessment and 1D / 2D modelling where required.
  • Prepare drainage improvement plans, flood mitigation measures, water balance studies and climate-resilience interventions.
  • Integrate GIS analysis with modelling outputs and prepare maps, drawings, technical reports and presentations.
  • Support EIA, environmental planning, lake / pond restoration, watershed and urban resilience assignments.
  • Carry out field visits, site assessments, data collection, client coordination and validation of technical assumptions.
  • Coordinate with Government departments, clients, consultants, field teams and internal verticals to ensure timely delivery.

Essential Attributes

  • The candidate must be technically sound, field-oriented, disciplined and delivery-focused. Clear written and verbal communication, independent working ability, ownership, integrity, professional maturity and willingness to learn are essential.
  • The role requires a practical engineering professional who can connect field realities, data, modelling, design thinking and implementation requirements.
  • Desirable exposure to Government / institutional projects, DPR preparation, tender support, drainage condition assessment, lake / pond studies, water balance assessment and stakeholder coordination will be an added advantage. Candidates with initiative, practical site sense and the ability to convert technical analysis into actionable recommendations will be preferred.
