Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a public company in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. With the financial support of the European Commission under the Technical Support Instrument (TSI), GIZ is implementing the project “Modernising the governance of the water sector in Greece”.
The objective of this project is to provide technical support to improve the governance of drinking and irrigation water services in Greece. The project will provide technical support to the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy (YPEN), the Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food (YPAAT) and the Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEY).
GIZ is currently looking for a Water Policy Expert who will support the implementation of the activities of the above-mentioned project. We offer a contract of limited duration under Greek employment regulations until June 2028 with the possibility for extension. The contract is foreseen to begin in September 2026. The position will involve travel within Greece as well as to other European countries.
The Water Policy Expert will be responsible for:
- providing technical support on policy, regulatory, institutional and management issues of the water sector in Greece to the project partners, in accordance with the work plan of the project and in concertation with the project manager
- establishing and managing cooperation relationships with project partners and important stakeholders in the Greek water sector
- monitoring and evaluating the development of the water sector in Greece and developing recommendations for policy, regulatory, institutional and management reforms
- assuring the collection, management and dissemination of relevant information and knowledge on the water sector within the project team and towards project partners
Qualifications
- Post-graduate degree or doctorate in environmental sciences, hydraulic engineering or economics
Professional experience
- At least 5 years’ professional experience in the water sector in a comparable position
- a proven track record in the provision of advisory services in the field of water policy, regulation and management
- professional experiences in the cooperation with public and private stakeholders in the Greek water sector
- very good knowledge of relevant legislation and regulation on water at EU level and in Greece
Other knowledge, additional competences
- computer literacy and ability to work with MS Office applications
- high level of analytical and organizational competence
- ability to work in teams as well as independently
- good communication and networking skills
- fluent written and oral knowledge of Greek and English
