MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity: Drought Impacts on High-Mountain Soil and Aquatic Ecosystems

Institute of Environmental Assessments and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC)

Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸

Publication date: 18 June 2026

Deadline: 15 July 2026

The Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) is seeking a postdoctoral candidate to apply for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026 call.

The selected candidate will develop a fellowship proposal under the supervision of Dr. Lluís Gomez Gener, within the Surface Hydrology, Ecology and Erosion (SHE2) group at IDAEA-CSIC (Barcelona, Spain), in close collaboration with CREAF and other national and international partners.

This project aims to investigate how drought alters soil biogeochemical processes in high-mountain catchments and how these changes propagate through terrestrial-aquatic connections to affect stream and river water quality.

The research will combine field observations, laboratory experiments, stable isotope techniques, high-frequency environmental monitoring, and ecosystem modelling to improve our understanding of ecosystem resilience to climate-induced water stress. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative methodologies and to shape specific research questions within the broader framework of the DRYLAND project.

What do we look for?

Qualifications

A PhD degree in Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Earth Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Biology, or a related discipline.

Professional experience

Experience with fieldwork, laboratory experiments, environmental monitoring, stable isotope techniques, biogeochemical analyses, ecosystem modelling, and/or environmental data analysis will be considered an advantage.

Competences

  • Programming and data-analysis skills (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB or similar) are desirable.
  • Experience handling large environmental datasets and statistical analyses is an asset.
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English.

We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic and collaborative researcher with strong analytical skills and motivation to develop innovative research ideas within an interdisciplinary scientific environment.

Please note that applicants must comply with the eligibility criteria of the MSCA PF 2026 call. In particular, candidates must hold a PhD degree by the call deadline; have a maximum of 8 years of research experience, and comply with MSCA PF Mobility Rule, available in the “2.3.2.
