Job Summary
UNICEF in collaboration with government authorities and FCDO in Nigeria has developed an innovative project ‘Climate Resilient Infrastructure for Basic Services’ (CRIBS) that aims to scale a model for assessing climate risks and vulnerabilities of primary healthcare facilities (PHCs) and primary schools and subsequently identifying and implementing interventions to make those facilities more resilient. The second phase of the CRIBS project (CRIBS II, 2025-2026) is being implemented in Bauchi, Enugu, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, and Katsina states in Nigeria. As the contracts are already signed, the engineer is expected to start work as soon as possible.
Job Details
Main Responsibilities and Tasks:
The responsibilities and key assignments for this consultancy in relation to the CRIBS Phase II Project are as follows:
- Undertaking detailed survey of PHCs and schools identified by CRIBS project for climate resilient interventions
- Preparing designs and BOQs for the PHCs and school facilities surveyed
- Undertake construction supervision of the work implemented by contractors
- Certify and valuate the construction work completed by construction contractors
- Undertake any other work assigned by the Supervisors
Deliverables
The Engineer is responsible for the following deliverables.
- Construction supervision of 5 facilities carried out for the facilities (PHCs and Schools) assigned to him/her through daily/weekly visit to facilities as agreed with the supervisor
- Progress status of construction work of assigned PHCs and Schools updated every week with photographs
- Detailed survey completed, and survey report including GPS coordinates, photographs, and submitted in a format provided by
UNICEF, when needed - As needed, prepare BOQ in the template provided by UNICEF with quality standards and drawings
All the above-mentioned reports are to be submitted on time to the WASH Specialist of Bauchi Field Office. Performance will be evaluated by the
technical Supervisor every three months, or more frequently if necessary. Based on performance, the Consultant’s tenure will be extended or
terminated. In case of termination, the Consultant will be notified in accordance with organizational guidelines.
Requirements
Education:
- Candidates should possess at least a university degree in Civil Engineering.
Language:
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English.
Knowledge of Local language (Hausa)
Work Experience:
- A minimum of three years’ professional experience in the civil engineering construction field is required.
- Experience in managing PHCs and School construction/rehabilitation projects would have added advantages.
- Experience in community dialogue, ability to work at community level and be able to speak the local language
- Teamwork and negotiation skills on project development issues at community level
- Excellent presentation skills, both in terms of written and oral communication.
- Willingness to travel to rural and semi-urban areas of the state/country.
- IT skills with ability to generate data, interpret and utilize it for planning.
- Ability to work effectively with LGAs and local leaders
