The Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), Germany’s scientific institute for research, assessment and consultancy in the fields of hydrology, water resources management and aquatic ecosystems, is seeking a highly motivated researcher to join the International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change (ICWRGC) in Koblenz, Germany.

The position is available as soon as possible and is offered on a part-time basis (19.5 hours per week) until 30 April 2029.

You will contribute to an international capacity development and research programme on climate change and water resources in West Africa. The position is embedded within the WASCAL (West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use) programme and involves close collaboration with the Université d’Abomey-Calavi (Benin) and the European Academic Network for Capacity Development in Climate Change Adaptation in Africa (NetCDA).

Your main responsibilities will include the coordination of an international doctoral programme on “Climate Change and Water Resources”, mentoring and supervision of doctoral candidates, organisation of scientific mobility activities, and scientific contributions related to water resources, climate change impacts, and water security in West Africa.

We are looking for a candidate with a doctoral degree in hydrology, geography, climatology, agricultural sciences, or a related discipline with a strong hydrological focus. Applicants should have demonstrated expertise in hydrology, water resources management, hydrometeorology, or related fields, as well as experience in supervising students and supporting scientific publications.

Knowledge of water-related challenges in West African countries is highly desirable. The successful candidate should possess excellent organisational and communication skills, intercultural competence, and experience working with international partners and networks. Familiarity with international organisations and development cooperation frameworks is considered an advantage.

Excellent written and spoken English is essential. Knowledge of French and additional languages is highly desirable. The position requires a willingness to undertake occasional national and international travel.
