Community Description: The Historic Saugeen Métis (HSM) is an Independent Métis community with an office in Southampton, Ontario, representing the descendants of Métis in the historic Métis community prior to settlement.
Description of Position: The Lands, Waters and Consultation Specialist is a dedicated professional, responsible for the coordination of large-scale energy projects in the region undergoing federal impact assessments. The Specialist engages with a broad range of regulators and proponents which include various levels of Government, Industry, and other organizations. The Specialist works closely with the Office Manager and staff while regularly liaising with the Historic Saugeen Métis Council and Community.
Essential Qualifications:
- Post-Secondary environmental science or related discipline at an accredited post-secondary institution mandatory;
- Knowledge of Métis Rights in Canada and the crown’s duty to consult;
- Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills;
- Sound knowledge of and ability to interpret legislation related to environmental activities and other disciplines related to major projects
- Ability to analyze complex materials, prepare written summaries and present information;
- Ability to attend site visits and field-based activities as required;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite;
- Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Asset Qualifications:
- Proficiency in GIS mapping and Esri software programs;
- Experience writing grant and funding proposals;
Primary Responsibilities will include:
- Acting as a representative for the community in all activities related to major projects and regulatory activities;
- Initiate, organize, develop agendas, schedule and lead regular engagement activities with government, industry and other organizations;
- Work directly with Lands, Waters and Consultation staff to assist with daily tasks, provide advice;
- Review complex reports, prepare follow-up reports for Council, staff and discussion;
- Plan and carry out regular engagement activities with the HSM Community to gather input and comments related to major projects and activities;
- Attend regular HSM Council meetings, provide update reports in writing;
- Organize and maintain electronic and paper filing systems;
- Attend regular site visits, conferences and professional development/ training sessions;
- Work in a team environment with Council, staff and various partners;
- Other duties that may arise related to Special Projects and Consultation activities.
Rate of Pay – $37-$42, depending on experience
Hours of Work – 32.5 hrs per week – Monday to Friday, 9am – 4pm (possibility of a 4-day work week)
