Description
Advanced Laser-Textured Superhydrophobic Surfaces for Antibacterial Food Safety and Atmospheric Water Harvesting
This project proposes the design and fabrication of multifunctional superhydrophobic surfaces by advanced laser texturing, targeting critical challenges in food safety, environmental sustainability, and water management. Using ultrafast femtosecond laser processing, the research will create hierarchical micro/nanostructures on metallic and ceramic substrates, achieving robust, durable, and tunable superhydrophobicity. These surfaces will be chemically functionalized to impart strong antibacterial properties, making them ideal for food industry applications where hygiene and biofilm prevention are essential. In parallel, the project will explore the use of these surfaces in atmospheric water harvesting devices, optimizing their wetting behavior to maximize water collection from humid air-a promising solution for water scarcity.
The fellow will combine experimental work (surface fabrication, contact angle measurements, antibacterial and water collection tests) with theoretical modeling (wetting dynamics, CFD simulations). Training will cover industrial laser processing, surface durability, prototype development, and the supervision of students, fostering leadership skills. The project will promote knowledge transfer through collaborations with industry and participation in dissemination and outreach activities. By integrating fundamental research, technological innovation, and real-world impact, this project contributes to the advancement of the Physics of Condensed Matter, supports the formation of future researchers, and addresses key societal challenges in sustainable water resources and food safety.
