Offer Description
A call for applications is open for a Research Grant (BI) within the scope of the project “Tech4Aqua – Intelligent Solution for Monitoring and Controlling Water Quality in Reservoirs”, funded by “Fundação La Caixa – PROMOVE”, under the following conditions:
1. Scientific Area:
Computer Engineering
2. Admission Requirements:
– The candidate must be enrolled in a master’s degree in computer engineering, or related scientific areas.
– Relevant experience in conducting research in Artificial Intelligence, data analysis and the Internet of Things.
3. Work Plan:
This work plan includes the development of the following main tasks:
i) Analysis of available data from reservoirs, including the identification of relevant parameters and understanding of their structure and variability.
ii) Selection of the most suitable algorithms for pattern identification and water quality prediction. iii) Development and training of the models.
iv) Testing of the developed models and evaluation of the models’ performance.
4. Objectives:
To develop an approach based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to analyze water quality in reservoirs located in northern Portugal, specifically in the municipalities of Chaves, Boticas, and Montalegre. Thus, the aim is to explore the relationship between different physicochemical and microbiological parameters, integrating time series data from IoT sensors, as well as evaluating the ability of AI models to anticipate situations of non-compliance with water quality standards, allowing for the reduction of contamination and consequent counter-analyses.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations:
Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, in its current wording; FCT, I.P. Research Grant Regulations
in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019.pdf);
Regulation No. 522/2020, published in the Official Gazette, 2nd series, No. 113, of June 12 – Research Grant Regulations of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança.
6. Workplace and scientific supervision:
The work will be carried out in the Research and Innovation Laboratory of CeDRI (Research Center for Digitalization and Intelligent Robotics) of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, under the scientific supervision of Lucas Sakurada.
7. Grant Duration:
The grant will have an initial duration of 12 months, with a planned start date of 01/07/2026 (with the possibility of renewal up to a maximum of 24 months, including the initial period).
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount:
The grant amount corresponds to 1090.98€, according to the table of grant values awarded by FCT, I.P. in the country.
Grant holders will benefit from personal accident insurance and, if they are not covered by any social protection scheme, they can ensure the exercise of their right to social security by joining the voluntary social insurance scheme, under the terms provided for in the Code of Contribution Schemes of the Social Security System. The grant amount will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
9. Selection methods and their respective evaluation:
The selection methods to be used will be the following:
a) Curriculum evaluation and its suitability for the work in question (40%);
b) Experience, according to the desired profile (40%);
c) Scientific curriculum, considering publications and participation in projects (20%). The Jury may call candidates for an interview if it requires clarification on the CV for a better evaluation of the criteria defined in the Selection Methods.
The jury may not award the grant if the candidates’ classification is lower than 9.5.
10. Composition of the Selection Jury:
The Jury will consist of Doctors Paulo Leitão (president), Maria João Varanda (member), Lucas Sakurada (member), and Luis Piardi (alternate).
11. Method of publication/notification of results:
Communications and final evaluation results will be published through the IPB application submission portal or, if necessary, by email notification.
