About the role
We are seeking a Research Assistant to be employed at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Imperial College London, UK. You will carry out research as part of the EWRE section, working on the project ‘NAMOR’ (A Novel compact and Advanced hybrid Microalgae-membrane photobioreactor Optimised for Retrofitting decentralised water and wastewater management systems) Water Europe Network. It is funded by the Horizon Europe Grant for Climate, Energy and Mobility programme. NAMOR consists of fourteen international partners that perform research focused on next-generation water treatment solution that combines the co-cultivation of microalgae and bacteria with advanced membrane filtration in a modular plug-and-play system. This innovative approach enables decentralised treatment of diverse water and wastewater streams and supports a sustainable and resilient urban water cycle.
What you would be doing
The aim of the project is to address technical, social, economic, institutional, and regulatory challenges that hinder decentralised water and wastewater treatment systems (DWWTS) widespread adoption. This is to be achieved by advancing beyond conventional methods to develop decentralised systems that are highly adaptable to local conditions, efficient in resource recovery, and resilient to fluctuating environmental parameters.
You will support the main researcher through delivering project results and submission of reports to the European Commission, as well as to the NAMOR consortium. In addition, you will be supervised by a Senior Researcher, as well as collaborate with other researchers, PhD students and industrial partners working on the NAMOR project at Imperial and elsewhere. Opportunities may arise to participate in conferences, as well as travel to present project results to the NAMOR consortium and EU Project Officer.
Therefore, this position offers a world-class range of training and development opportunities in a highly stimulating environment, as well as access to internationally leading academics and industrial partners, research facilities, and networks.
You will also be expected to submit results in the form of publications to peer-reviewed journals.
What we are looking for
- A first / masters degree (or equivalent) in engineering (civil, chemical, environmental)
- Experience of Sustainability and circularity assessment
- Knowledge of Environmental and Social sciences
- Knowledge of basic research methods and statistical procedures
- Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature
- Ability to develop and apply new concepts
What we can offer you
- The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
- Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
- Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
- Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
