Local recruitment: Hydrology Specialist (Australia nationals)

Australia Bureau of Meteorology

Melbourne VIC, Australia 🇦🇺

Canberra ACT, Australia 🇦🇺

We are seeking a Hydrology Specialist to support operational climate and hydrological services. Based in the Bureau’s Melbourne or Canberra Office, this position will report to the Team Lead of Operational Climate and Hydrological Services.

The role will support extended hydrological prediction, hydrological monitoring, situational awareness and water reporting services. Products and services are delivered to the general public and the Bureau’s internal partners in Decision Support Services, Business Solutions Group and Enterprise Services Group.

This is primarily a service delivery role requiring skills in hydrological analysis, and/or working with large, complex datasets, coupled with a mindset of delivering the best science-based hydro-climate intelligence and information in operational timeframes.
A strong understanding of water resource management within the Australian context and water accounting, in particularly the National Water Account (NWA) and the Urban National Performance Report (NPR), as well as knowledge of water reform in Australia, is critical to the role. Experience with gridded water balance modelling and water information is highly desirable.

To be successful in this role you will be highly engaged in understanding the real-world impacts of our changing weather and climate, with a desire to constantly improve and communicate the Bureau’s hydro-climate services in line with the agile needs of consumers and stakeholders.

The role will also have the opportunity to contribute to strategic uplift activities across the Bureau’s water information program, including collaboration with BSG on enhancements to the NWA and strengthened engagement with key partners such as the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
