Duties and Responsibilities
Organizational Setting and Reporting The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) has partnered with UN-Habitat to implement an Adaptation Fund project on “Increasing the resilience of both displaced persons and host communities to climate change-related water challenges.” The project aims to improve the response to climate change impacts on the availability of water resources to displaced persons and their host communities in Lebanon and Jordan. The project is led by UN-Habitat. ESCWA is responsible for implementing the regional knowledge management, advocacy and communications component of the project. The Communications Consultant would be responsible for the communications of the project, as overseen by ESCWA. The position is located in the Communication and Information Unit at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) in Beirut, Lebanon and will work closely with the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster that is coordinating this Project. Responsibilities With delegated authority, the Communications Consultant will be responsible for the following duties: • Drafting of press releases, stories in English/Arabic on engagements in international seminars raising awareness on project activities • Supporting visual branding of the project for use in documentation and media, including proposing logo or visual identity for the project for approval by the project partners. • Assisting in planning and advertising webinars for the Urban Water and Climate Resilience Community of Practice • Uploading of knowledge products onto the knowledge platform • Setting-up and maintaining a digital platform with project baseline and results, including human interest stories related to fields visits, including photography during site visits • Communicating with project partners and stakeholders to identify and solicit human-interest stories • Supporting the production of outputs and infographics in English with Arabic summaries for dissemination, including in digital formats • Overseeing the development of as “after” video that showcases the Adaptation Fund project achievements. This includes preparing a storyboard, interviewing stakeholders, and supporting the video editing process. • Preparing human-interest stories through various media (video clips, photos, narratives), including taking photos/video clips related to field visits undertaken during the project, including travel to project sites to collect needed documentation and images from the field in coordination with project partners. • Disseminating project impacts on social media in English and Arabic for posting and dissemination in coordination with ESCWA Communications Unit, UN-Habitat counterparts and other project partners • Support administrative arrangements and dissemination of project-related engagements in meetings. • Provide communications support to other climate change related projects at ESCWA.
Qualifications/special skills
A first-level university degree is required, preferably in communication, journalism, web development or related field is required. Note: All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incompleteapplications will not be reviewed. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, web development, graphic design, videography and/or related area is required. Experience overseeing video productions is required. Experience in producing material for interactive knowledge management products (webpages, augmented and virtual reality products) is desirable. General awareness regarding water and climate change challenges facing the local communities in the Middle East is desirable. Knowledge of communicating environmental issues is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge in French is desirable. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
