As the Hydrogeologist, you will provide authoritative, in-house hydrogeological expertise to shape the City’s hydrogeology practices, standards, and long-term technical approaches. Operating with a high degree of professional autonomy, you will support multiple business units by influencing technical practices, standards, and risk-informed decision-making. Primary duties include:

  • Lead advanced hydrogeological assessments in support of City-led and private development projects, addressing complex groundwater flow systems, seepage processes, slope stability interactions, flood risk, and dam and contaminant infrastructure safety.
  • Assess and interpret site-specific hydrogeologic and geotechnical conditions, identify groundwater-related hazards, and uncertainties, and evaluate the significance of potential impacts to municipal infrastructure, environmental receptors, and public safety.
  • Plan, design, and oversee comprehensive hydrogeological field programs, including borehole drilling and logging, installation of groundwater monitoring wells and piezometric networks, in-situ and laboratory testing, instrumentation deployment, data acquisition, and development of long-term groundwater monitoring and management strategies.
  • Provide senior-level technical oversight and direction to consultants and contractors conducting hydrogeological investigations; critically review and interpret investigation methodologies, analytical results, and deliverables to ensure data integrity, technical defensibility, and fitness for regulatory and operational decision-making.
  • Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with applicable Provincial groundwater, environmental protection, water management, and dam safety legislation and associated standards; conduct detailed technical and regulatory reviews of consultant submissions to assess adequacy, conformance with legislative and guideline requirements, and alignment with best hydrogeological practices.
  • Interpret and integrate hydrogeological and subsurface data from multiple sources to support evidence-based planning, engineering design, and groundwater related risk management decisions affecting infrastructure and public safety.
  • Manage projects throughout all stages to ensure the procurement, design, construction, and close-out phases are delivered on schedule, on budget, and to a high-quality standard in alignment with the project’s business case and charter.

  • Advanced training and demonstrated professional experience in groundwater assessment, hydrogeological monitoring program design, development and refinement of site conceptual models, and management of hydrogeological datasets are required, including advanced use of GIS and CAD platforms for spatial analysis, interpretation, and data integration.
  • Experience must also include interpretation of borehole and lithologic data, design, installation, and evaluation of groundwater monitoring wells, and the use, calibration, and interpretation of field instrumentation for groundwater level and quality monitoring.
  • A master’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Civil Engineering, or Environmental Engineering is considered an asset.
  • Experience with three-dimensional subsurface conceptualization and numerical or geological modeling is considered an asset.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to exercise independent professional judgment, provide technical guidance and subject matter expertise, resolve complex and ill-defined hydrogeological problems, and communicate findings effectively to a broad range of technical and non-technical interest holders.
