Researcher in attribution of compound climate extremes and their impacts

Are you interested in working with attribution of compound climate extremes and their impacts, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a researcher position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden’s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues.

Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development.

Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions:

• Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy

For more information see: www.uu.se/earthsciences

The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at: LUVAL.

You will work in close collaboration with international experts in climate science, natural hazards and statistics. You will also be part of the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes, www.climes.se). Climes is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University, and RISE. The centre is at the core of an interdisciplinary research community and regularly coordinates scientific meetings, international exchanges, and training opportunities. The position is based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University.

Duties

As researcher within the Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes) you will contribute to developing statistical approaches for the attribution of compound climate extremes and their impacts. The work spans both multiple extreme events co-occurring in time and space, and events occurring in temporal succession.

Requirements

PhD degree in climate science, hydrology, environmental engineering, meteorology or related field, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects.

We are looking for a researcher who has a strong self-drive, works independently and takes initiative. You should have past experience in extreme event attribution for compound climate extremes. You should also demonstrate excellent spoken and written communication skills in English and have authored peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals. We further require good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different research groups.

Additional qualifications

Having obtained competitive research funding is an advantage, as is previous postdoctoral experience and experience of having conducted research in different countries.
