As an Intermediate Operator (DWD), you will be responsible for a variety of activities and tasks within the operation of the drinking water system. You will direct, coach and mentor Junior Operators. Provide direct supervision on site (medium to low-risk activities) to ensure that work is performed efficiently, safely, within the time allotted and in accordance with standards, and may direct others of an equal or lower classification to perform duties to complete work at the site. Primary duties include:
- Assess site-specific conditions to conduct an analysis of risks, impacts, safety, dependencies, resourcing.
- Use sources of information including legislative and regulatory standards to develop and apply solutions.
- Plan, organize and delegate maintenance activities to the appropriate personnel to ensure system is maintained according to legislative and regulatory standards.
- Perform planned/unplanned maintenance and repair activities on the drinking water distribution system.
- Ensure the work is compliant with standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Provide coaching and mentoring on maintenance activities for Junior Operators and other staff. Report to Supervisors and leaders on crew performance and development.
- Monitor, triage and respond to 311 calls, including completing repairs or directing work to the appropriate level.
- Monitor work done on the system, provide feedback for system and process improvements.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent (e.g., GED or CAEC [Canadian Adult Education Certificate), Level 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification, and at least 4 years of experience working on the Water Distribution System; OR
- A completed 1-year technical certificate in Water and Wastewater, Level 1 Water Distribution Operator Certification, and at least 2 years of experience working on the Water Distribution System.
- At least 2 years experience in one or more of the following areas is required:
- Plan and implement shutdown and bypass activities.
- Perform pressure tests, fire flow tests, and set Pressure Reducing Valves (PRVs).
- Ensure water quality through proper sampling, disinfection, and flushing.
- Replace/repair/install various types/sizes of water mains, services, valves, hydrants, and other infrastructure.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent), with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
- Ability and willingness to use software and desktop or remote devices.
- Interpersonal skills and being adaptable are important assets in this role.
- Success in this position requires applicants to hold safety as a value, as working safely is critical in all tasks performed and in all decisions made.
Working Conditions: Primarily outside at field locations including excavation sites, manholes, residential streets, above and below ground.
