Overview

Carollo Engineers is an internationally recognized environmental engineering firm specializing in the planning, design, and construction of water and wastewater facilities. Carollo’s Water Applied Research Center (Water ARC®) provides nationwide, process-based research and applied engineering expertise for municipal and private-sector clients across drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and infrastructure applications. Water ARC® services span laboratory and field-based testing, pilot and demonstration studies, and the development of innovative tools that bridge research and consulting practice. More information can be found here:https://carollo.com/innovation/water-applied-research-center/.

Carollo is seeking a staff- to mid-level Process Engineer whose role will be split between leading Water ARC® initiatives—primarily the I-FLOAT® off-gas testing program and supporting wastewater process engineering consulting projects across the firm. Approximately 50–60% of this position will be dedicated to applied research activities, with a strong emphasis on leading and growing the I-FLOAT® program and field-based testing. The remaining 40–50% of the role will support a variety of wastewater process engineering and consulting efforts, depending on business needs and the individual’s expertise.

I-FLOAT®, developed within Water ARC®, is Carollo’s internally developed off-gas testing solution designed to lower the logistical and cost barriers associated with off-gas testing, enabling broader deployment across WRRFs. Through I-FLOAT®, Carollo is expanding the industry’s ability to quantify real-world oxygen transfer performance and emissions (e.g., N₂O, CO₂), improve aeration design and operation, and support emerging needs related to quantify greenhouse gas emissions factors. More information can be found here: https://carollo.com/innovation/i-float/.

At Carollo, you will work alongside a collaborative and technically driven team that is passionate about advancing the state of practice in wastewater treatment. This role offers a unique opportunity to combine hands-on field testing, data interpretation, team leadership, and client engagement while helping shape a growing national program.

Responsibilities

Water ARC® and I-FLOAT® Responsibilities (≈50–60%)

  • Serve as a technical lead for Carollo’s I-FLOAT® off-gas testing program within Water ARC®, supporting aeration performance and emissions characterization studies nationwide.
  • Lead multiple off-gas testing studies, varying in scale, complexity, and duration.
  • Coordinate with utility staff, internal project managers, and engineering teams.
  • Perform and oversee QA/QC of off-gas data collection, including sensor validation, calibration review, data screening, and documentation.
  • Analyze and interpret process emissions data, translating results into engineering-relevant metrics such as oxygen transfer efficiency, aeration performance, and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Develop, refine, and standardize off-gas testing protocols, workflows, and best practices.
  • Contribute to applied research efforts, including internal R&D, conference abstracts, technical papers, and industry presentations.
  • Support Carollo’s broader emissions and aeration initiatives by helping advance methodologies related to greenhouse gas monitoring and performance-based aeration evaluation.

Wastewater Process Engineering and Consulting Responsibilities (≈40–50%)

  • Support wastewater process engineering consulting projects across Carollo, including studies related to nutrient removal, capacity assessments, and master planning.
  • Support process modeling and simulation efforts using tools such as BioWin, SUMO, GPS-X, or similar platforms to support planning, preliminary design, and optimization efforts.
  • Prepare technical memoranda and reports documenting study findings, assumptions, modeling results, and engineering recommendations.
  • Apply field data, performance testing results, and applied research outcomes to inform process evaluations and design decisions.
  • Support applied research projects under the Carollo Research Group, as needed, beyond I-FLOAT-specific initiatives.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to support project delivery and client needs across the company.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (required) in one of the following or related fields:
    • Environmental, civil, or chemical engineering
    • Environmental or applied engineering sciences
  • 1–4 years of experience in wastewater treatment process engineering, with demonstrated experience related to aeration systems.
  • Strong understanding of activated sludge processes, aeration fundamentals, and gas-liquid transfer concepts.
  • Background in gas-transfer processes or wastewater-related greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Familiarity with process modeling, aeration control strategies, or energy optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with field data collection, instrumentation, and QA/QC procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret complex datasets and translate results into practical engineering insights.
  • Experience working directly with clients and internal project teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent efforts in a dynamic, field-oriented environment.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 20–30% for site testing, meetings, and conferences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD (preferred) in environmental, civil, or chemical engineering.
  • Direct experience with off-gas testing, oxygen transfer efficiency testing, or aeration performance evaluations.
  • Experience leading small technical teams or task groups.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE), State of California
