Role Responsibilities

The Water Supply Data Specialist supports Alberta’s real‑time water data collection systems, ensuring critical hydrometric, reservoir operations, water quality, and groundwater data are accurate, reliable, and available for decision‑making. As part of the ministry’s critical services team, the role includes participating in 24/7 on‑call rotations during flooding, ice break‑up, heavy rainfall, and other emergency events. You will maintain and enhance data systems, verify data quality, and help improve accessibility and performance of water supply information used across the province.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and operate real‑time and historical water data systems, including troubleshooting telemetry and data communication issues.
  • Perform QA/QC to ensure reliable, accurate water supply data.
  • Support system improvements by working with internal teams on upgrades, enhancements, and data integrity initiatives.
  • Provide training and technical support to staff, partners, and the public on accessing and interpreting water data.
  • Participate in shift work and on‑call rotations during emergency events to ensure continuous data availability.

Qualifications

Required:

Education: A two‑year technical diploma in Water Resources Technology, Environmental Science, Hydrology, or a closely related discipline.

Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of directly related experience, including:
•    Experience with telemetry, data communications, data management, and data acquisition systems.
•    A strong understanding of real-time hydrological and meteorological data.
•    Experience using data management tools such as WISKI.

Other: Valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent.

Equivalency: Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one-for-one basis.

Assets:
•    Knowledge of water monitoring programs and water resource activities in Alberta (e.g., flood forecasting, dam operations, irrigation networks).
•    Familiarity with programming languages such as Python.
•    Knowledge of operating systems and database tools, including Linux, Windows, MS Access, Excel, and SQL.

Notes

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Edmonton. The standard work schedule is Monday to Friday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., totaling 36.25 hours per week.

In this role, you will primarily work in an office setting located in Edmonton, supporting the province’s real‑time and historical water data systems. You will have regular, ongoing contact with industry partners, consultants, other government staff, and members of the public while addressing data needs and system issues. Some travel may be required to collaborate with field teams and support priority operational work of the branch. As part of the ministry’s critical services team, you will also participate in shift work or on‑call rotations during events such as flooding, ice break‑up, or severe weather.
