JOB DESCRIPTION
This position will manage the annual maintenance of the Agency’s 88 surface water gauging station network. To manage and oversee the installation of new gauging stations. Please note this position follows a hybrid work schedule to include both in-office and telework. Candidates must be able to work from the assigned work location in Virginia.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This position primarily ensures the accuracy and consistency of the surface water stage data by managing subordinates in conducting flow measurements and retrieving stage data from the network gauges every 6 to 8 weeks. This position will also direct subordinates in conducting extreme condition flow measurements at network sites during floods or droughts; and assist with processing, verifying, and publishing the current statistical flow data for publication in the annual “USGS Water Resources Data – Virginia” report.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of surface water hydrology, hydraulic principles, basic mathematics, and statistical analysis.
- Demonstrated experience in stream flow measuring methods and techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in land surveying techniques. Demonstrated ability to effectively use computer systems and software to include Microsoft Office products and statistical software.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Strong analytical skills; organizational skills; interpersonal skills; and the physical ability to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects and be able to use hand/construction tools.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as be an integral part of a fast-paced, productive team.
- Experience in hydrologic data processing and statistical analysis of hydrologic data.
- Experience using various techniques to measure stream flow.
- Experience in land surveying techniques. Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) training and confined space entry certification beneficial.
- This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- Must pass U.S. Department of Interior criminal background check.
