Summary of Role & Key Responsibilities
We are seeking a Water Stewardship expert at the Principal Consultant or Senior Consultant level to meet growing demand from North American and global clients for solutions addressing shared water challenges. The successful candidate will have an outstanding track record helping companies develop effective water stewardship strategies, measure and manage water-related risks and opportunities, transparently report progress, and recommend solutions for improved operational and supply chain water management and watershed restoration.
As a key subject matter expert expanding our Nature service, you will support clients across industries in developing context-based and science-based freshwater targets, promoting adoption of stewardship tools and technologies, and measuring impacts on critical watershed concerns including water quantity, water quality, and access to clean water and sanitation. Our ideal candidate possesses a robust understanding of water inventories and risk assessments, ESG reporting for water, and developing water stewardship strategies across corporate value chains.
You will demonstrate proven experience tackling sector-specific water challenges; assessing water-related risks and opportunities across industries; developing roadmaps to improve operational water management and supplier engagement; conducting financial assessments to quantify the true cost of water; and identifying opportunities to restore watershed health and measure progress. Essential qualifications include knowledge of emerging regulatory developments, understanding of leading water stewardship frameworks and water benefit accounting methodologies, and demonstrated project management experience.
The Water Stewardship Consultant will collaborate with colleagues across Anthesis’s global and North American practices—including Climate, ESG Strategy and Reporting, and Circularity & Value Chain Transformation—to deliver expertise on holistic nature-positive solutions. You will help clients understand their interrelated risks, dependencies, impacts, and opportunities across water, biodiversity, climate, and communities across priority tiers and regions of their value chains. Your work will span diverse industries, from Fortune 500 companies to boutique brands, requiring engagement with clients, suppliers, and stakeholders (employees, investors, associations, and NGOs) worldwide. The focus centers on building foundational water stewardship strategies that address shared challenges and advance positive environmental outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Water Stewardship Expertise – As a Principal or Senior Consultant in our Water Stewardship Service Line, you will be responsible for supporting clients in conducting water inventories, water risk assessments, goal/target setting, developing and implementing water stewardship strategies and roadmaps, calculating the true cost of water for supply chains and operations, and conducting water benefit accounting across diverse projects and sectors/industries.
- Project Management – You will be manage the delivery of client engagements targeted at improving water and nature-based analysis, performance, and disclosures. You will be responsible for these projects being on time, budget, and schedule. You will be managing several projects at any one time, each with their own dedicated project teams.
- Client Management – Working with a senior client manager on each project, you will share responsibility for managing client expectations as well helping them optimize value through projects to drive continuous, strategic improvement. You will work to develop a trusted advisor relationship with all clients and focus relentlessly on helping them be successful in defining and achieving their sustainability goals.
- Business Development – You will be contributing to and developing proposals for potential clients and projects and represent Anthesis during interviews as the consultancy best positioned to support. You will also be expanding scopes of engagement and support with existing clients, helping them drive their sustainability agenda and identifying opportunities to integrate across service offerings to provide holistic sustainability solutions.
- Creative Communication – You will need to be proficient and effective at communicating the client’s sustainability purpose, commitments, and performance, in a way that is credible and meets the clients’ needs, while balancing the technical requirements of reporting and the creative aspects of sustainability storytelling.
Key Requirements & Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Senior Consultant: 5+ years of experience as a sustainability practitioner, with expertise in water stewardship within a company’s direct operations and value chain
- Principal Consultant: 7+ years of experience as a sustainability practitioner, with expertise in water stewardship within a company’s direct operations and value chain
- Demonstrated familiarity with leading water stewardship frameworks and guidance such as CEO Water Mandate’s Positive Water Impact, Science-Based Target Network’s freshwater methodology, and the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard.
- Experience conducting basin-level and local/operational water risk assessments, including use of publicly available water risk and valuation tools such as WRI’s Aqueduct tools (Water Risk Atlas, Food, Floods) and WWF’s Risk Filter Suite Demonstrated expertise in nature-related reporting particularly as it pertains to water, including CDP Water Security and TNFD, and familiarity with emerging regulations such as CSRD.
- Experience with watershed restoration and replenishment projects and with water benefit accounting, including Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting, Water Quality Benefit Accounting, and the emerging Biodiversity Benefit Accounting
- Additional technical water expertise in terms of basin hydrology, agriculture water use and water quality management, and/or industrial water management is highly valued.
- Excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail in large datasets, savvy with data visualizations, and advanced competency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience developing dynamic dashboards using platforms such as PowerBI or Tableau is valued.
- A personable and passionate individual that works well with teams.
- Comfortable and confident liaising with key stakeholders across all levels of a business.
- A critical thinker and proactive problem-solver who takes initiative to identify and propose solutions for potential roadblocks or alternative paths forward.
- An ability to manage a variety of projects at any one time.
