Job Summary:

This position is responsible for providing technical support and assisting the coordination efforts with ADEQ, EPA and other federal, state and local agencies and private entities concerning well construction, well abandonment, and vertical cross-contamination/plume migration issues near groundwater contamination sites. Additionally, this position assists with preparation of quarterly and annual reports to ADEQ, the legislature, and the Governor, as well as periodic ADWR-internal reports.

Job Duties:

Responsibilities include:

Responsible for researching areas of known groundwater contamination to identify site-specific hydrogeology that nesses site-specific well construction and abandonment procedures to protect human health and the environment by preventing vertical cross-contamination. Furthermore, the person in this position will participate and represents ADWR at WQARF and remedial action site meetings, conduct hydrologic reviews of groundwater withdrawal permits and Notices of Intent (NOI) to drill, abandon, replace, deepen or modify a well; and will plan and conduct activities to evaluate potential vertical cross-contamination of aquifers and migration of contamination plumes.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department’s business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Well construction (water supply wells, monitoring wells, remediation wells) Hydraulics and well impact analysis (groundwater flow and contaminate transport), lithologic logs, and aquifer testing.
  • Groundwater flow modeling: analytical and numerical, familiar statutes, rules, policies related to wells, groundwater withdrawals and groundwater management
  • Database management and geographical information systems
  • Excel or other spreadsheet software, data extraction and reporting, data presentation, technical report writing and editing.

Skills in:

  • Developing and maintaining GIS-Based well screening tool to identify potential impact associated with known water quality issues
  • Maintaining relational databases and creating queries to extract and using geospatial techniques to analyze hydrogeological data
  • Analyzing and interpreting complex hydrogeologic reports, technical writing, including presentation of statistical analyses
  • Conducting hydrologic research involving multiple data sources
  • Must have strong interpersonal as well as verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organizational, Problem identification and resolution skills.
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Process improvement

Ability to:

  • Balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks.
  • Understanding of principles of research methods and reporting techniques used in organizational studies.

Selective Preference(s):

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, hydrology, or a related field, or a related field, and two (2) years of hydrologic or a related experience; or a Master’s degree in one of the above fields.
