Evaluating the impacts of plastic pollution on community structure and functioning in aquatic ecosystems

Università degli Studi dell'Insubria

Varese, Italy 🇮🇹

Offer Description

This project will investigate the role of plastic in mediating biological dispersal and altering microbial community assembly in aquatic ecosystems. More specifically, it will assess how biofouled plastics influence germination, dispersal, and community composition of phytoplankton and benthic organisms, with a focus on algae.
The research will be conducted through controlled microcosm ad mesocosm experiments, combining environmental and reference plastic substrates. Community composition will be analyzed using DNA-based techniques, alongside chlorophyll fluorescence and optical microscopy. Functional traits of biofilms will be characterized through enzymatic activities, extracellular polymeric substances, and photosynthetic efficiency. The project aims to elucidate previously unexplored ecological implications of plastic accumulation in sediments and water columns.
