The Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science encompasses education and research in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis, and physical geography. More information on the programme’s science can be found at Luval.

The Swedish Centre for Impacts of Climate Extremes (climes.se) is a collaboration between Uppsala University, Lund University and RISE. The Centre is at the core of a prolific interdisciplinary scientific community, and seeks to lead a lively series of meetings, international exchanges and training events. The centre also hosts several national and international research projects. All centre activities have a broad focus on impacts of climate extremes: from financial losses to impacts on ecosystems to consequences for society and public health. Positions at the centre come with considerable freedom to develop your own research ideas, generous funding for international stays within the centre’s network, the opportunity to suggest leading foreign experts to be invited to Sweden for research visits and a strong focus on career development.

Duties

You will work on data collection and/or analysis of impacts of mid-latitude climate extremes. Within this scope, there is considerable freedom to focus on different specific topics or approaches. Teaching/supervising duties are possible on a voluntary basis. You will be based at the Dept. of Earth Sciences in Uppsala, but will be expected to travel both nationally and internationally.

Requirements

PhD degree in climate science, meteorology, natural hazards, physics, applied mathematics, statistics, data science or related disciplines or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in the above subjects. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher who has a strong self-drive, works independently and takes initiative. You should enjoy developing and testing new ideas. You should also have a demonstrated ability to communicate your research in a timely manner through peer-reviewed articles in leading international academic journals, and have excellent spoken and written communication skills in English. You need to have good cooperation skills as the work involves collaborations with different international research networks and centres.

Additional qualifications

Previous experience with analysis of large climate data and work with extreme weather are a merit. We place particular weight on the quality of peer-reviewed publications.
