Are you a scientific professional (e.g., hydrogeology, hydrology, biology, chemistry and/or water resources) with a drive to provide expert advice, leadership, and assessment support on scientific matters which help guide policy and program decision making and drive effective compliance programs? The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks is currently seeking a knowledgeable and forward thinking science advisor to support Ontario’s priorities, including responsible mineral development in Northern Ontario.
You will play a key role in evaluating the environmental implications of priority industrial sectors, such as mining, applying scientific principles, analytical tools, and regulatory requirements to support evidence based decision making. Working alongside specialists in groundwater, surface water, air quality, and related disciplines, you will help shape the environmental conditions required for mining operations to proceed responsibly.

About the job
In this role, you will:
• Support the ministry in navigating complex scientific questions, regulatory requirements, and site specific environmental issues.
• Review and analyze technical information submitted by proponents, including hydrogeological, surface water, air quality, and environmental impact studies.
• Prepare clear, concise technical advice, summaries, and briefing materials for colleagues and senior decision makers.
• Help identify potential environmental risks and recommend mitigation strategies based on evidence and best practices.
• Collaborate with companies, Indigenous communities, other ministries, and federal partners to support transparent and consistent information sharing.
• Support the ministry in responding to evolving priorities, new scientific information, and emerging issues.
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge:
• You have experience applying the theories, principles and methodologies in sciences, environmental and earth sciences, urban and land studies and various disciplines.
• You have knowledge of Climate Change, renewable energy, toxicology, water resources, modeling, industrial pollution controls.
• You can apply environmental policies, programs, legislation and regulations that impact climate change, air, water and land quality and emerging trends and technologies in the resolution of issues or concerns, environmental risks, and suitability of new policy or regulatory initiatives.
• You can apply provincial environmental legislation, environmental standards, and guidelines when interpreting analytical results.
• You can advise on issues at the national and international levels impacting the ministry and the environment.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• You can conduct scientific analyses, prepare reports and presentations.
• You can communicate with varying degrees of scientific knowledge to diverse audiences and translate complex scientific content
• You can use your influencing skills to provide advice in the resolution of issues or concerns, environmental risks, and suitability of compliance activities, new policy or regulatory initiatives.
• You have negotiation skills to support committees related to complex scientific issues and to maintain relationships.
• You can use influencing skills to gain cooperation and ensure professional management and staff related to new processes, standards, policies, guidelines and best practices.
• You can translate complex scientific language into simple terms to inform policy development and critical ministry decision-making.
Analytical and Research Skills:
• You have analytical skills to evaluate various environmental scientific documents, data and products developed by academics, scientists and other professionals.
• You can interpret results, identify and analyze emerging issues/trends, and review recommendations.
• You can evaluate and advise on application of legislation and regulations in the interpretation of results.
• You can manage problems related to complex scientific issues in climate change, air, water, and land quality and identify methods to articulate and address issues and risks to the environment.
Project and Risk Management Experience:
• You have knowledge of and experience applying project management methods and best practices to lead a range of concurrent project initiatives.
• You can develop products for diverse audiences including the Minister, Deputy Minister and other government officials.
• You can apply risk assessment and risk management principles to make recommendations on complex scientific issues.
