Post-doctorate in Hydrogeology via EURAXESS

University of Montpellier

Montpellier, France 🇫🇷

Offer Description

Work environment : HydroSciences Montpellier (HSM) is a joint research unit bringing together scientists from IRD, the University of Montpellier, CNRS, and IMT Mines Alès. The UMR, associated with the OSU OREME, specializes in several disciplines related to water sciences, including hydrology, ecohydrology, and hydrogeology. It has acquired extensive expertise in metrology, conducting laboratory

Main mission : Study of microplastics in karst aquifers: origins, transport, associated contamination

Activities : The main task is initially to take samples and filter water (mainly karst water) in situ from boreholes or springs at different water levels (low water, high water, floods), and then to analyze their quality in the laboratory. Using the most relevant analytical methods, the aim will be to target any microplastics that may be present and characterize them. Hydrochemical analyses (major elements, trace elements including rare earths) and bacteriological analyses will be carried out in parallel. These will be performed using the resources provided by the HSM and IATE laboratories’ analytical platforms. The target aquifer is that of the Lez, given its proximity to Montpellier and the challenges it poses for the city, but another aquifer may also be targeted for comparison. The interpretation of the results in the hydrogeological context should lead to the identification of the origin of the microplastics observed, the characterization of their presence in the different compartments of the karst, and the establishment of the transport processes to the outlets. Indirectly, this study aims to propose a robust method for assessing microplastic contamination in karst aquifers. The mission includes a component for “promoting” the work associated with this study; this will involve producing one or more publications and possibly a patent.
