As the Senior Development Engineer, you will report to the Coordinator, Utility Specialists in Community Planning. In this role, you will provide leadership to a team of engineers and technical staff and support engineering review of Development Applications Review Team (DART) applications, capital project circulations, and approval process optimization. Primary duties include:

  • Support a team of professionals by coordinating day-to-day work loads, subject matter expertise, and issues management. Provide leadership on decision making and developing creative, out-of-the-box solutions that ensure consistent and predictable application of standards and requirements.
  • Provide oversight and professional utility engineering judgement on complex applications including: land use applications, outline plan applications, development permits, capital utility design review, provincial capital utility review, subdivision applications, servicing reports, storm pond design, and detailed design construction drawings reviews.
  • Act as a change agent within the Utility Specialist team and lead projects to improve processes and employee engagement, with specific emphasis on streamlining review and approval processes, and coordinating cross corporate utility input into development applications and associated servicing reports.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners, developers, engineering consultants and contractors to ensure that quality City infrastructure is designed, constructed, and operating as intended.

Qualifications 

  • A degree in Engineering.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a degree in Civil Engineering.
  • You must have at least 6 years of relevant professional engineering experience in design and/or construction of water, sanitary and stormwater systems and related infrastructure obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience in land development and management of staff.
  • Knowledge of the stormwater approvals process, both corporate and provincial, is a preferred asset.
  • Demonstrated abilities in the following areas: decision making; influencing and negotiation; critical and analytical thinking and problem solving; change management; business acumen; strong communication; strategic leadership; conflict resolution; and coaching and mentoring.

  • This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees.
