Mō te tūranga | About the role

  • We are seeking a suitably experienced and motivated person for the full-time, permanent position of Team Leader Hydrology within the Environmental Monitoring Section.
  • Based in Hamilton.
  • You will be accountable for the operation of our region’s flood warning network (river level, flow and rainfall) to ensure the safety of people and property. 
  • Over the next two years, a major priority will be upgrading monitoring sites and telemetry systems to strengthen network resilience during significant flood events.

The team also provide the following services:

  • Low flow and general SOE hydrology monitoring.
  • Manage monitoring site asset maintenance and construction.
  • Operate in accordance with the National Environmental Monitoring Standards (NEMS)
  • Support sea level and coastal meteorological monitoring.
  • Manage the contract for Air quality monitoring to meet NES requirements.
  • To support and grow the skills of the team especially those undertaking the NZ hydrology diploma.
  • Providing an environment for the successful delivery of key projects and work programmes.
  • A strong focus on ensuring our staff come home safely every day through your leadership and management of our safety systems and culture.
  • You will work closely with the three other Team Leaders, covering Water Quality, Ecology and Data Management, to provide the positive culture for our staff to be their best. 
  • You will contribute to strategy development and work programme planning as part of the monitoring leadership team.

  • Able to lead and coach staff.
  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate with others to achieve our monitoring goals.
  • Comfortable providing advice and making decisions to achieve results, sometimes with limited information.
  • Proven experience in work planning, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.

Mō ngā pūkenga | Qualifications and experience

  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • At least 5 years’ experience across relevant disciplines.
  • Proven knowledge and understanding of hydrological monitoring methods, processing and systems (data acquisition, remote site power solutions and telemetry).
  • Project management experience desirable.
