What you’ll do: 

  • Design, develop and implement contemporary, risk-based hydroclimate models to assess extreme weather and hydrological events
  • Apply a systematic, best-practice approach to the use of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) data for flood and seasonal forecasting at river basin scale, including the analysis of storm magnitude, spatial distribution, basin characteristics and flood data.
  • Collate, quality-assure and curate catchment-specific hydroclimate and hydrological datasets for NSW valleys to support advanced hydrologic and hydroclimate modelling applications.
  • Conduct scenario modelling of extreme flood events to inform Portfolio Risk Assessments for declared NSW dams and support evidence-based risk management decisions.
  • Collaborate closely with external research partners and internal Information Technology teams to transition state-of-the-art hydroclimate research into reliable, fit-for-purpose operational modelling systems.

What we are looking for:  

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, Computational Science or a closely related discipline
  • Current NSW Driver Licence.
  • Demonstrated experience in flood and water forecasting, including the investigation and assessment of hydrologic impacts arising from climate variability and climate change.
  • Demonstrated capability in analysing, managing and visualising large, multi-dimensional datasets to support scientific, engineering or operational decision-making.
  • Experience working with scientific and geospatial data formats, including NetCDF and other common meteorological, hydrological and spatial datasets.
  • Experience working effectively within multi-disciplinary teams to meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities, combined with the ability to work independently to define, plan and deliver specific work objectives.
