Uppsala University, Department of Geosciences
Uppsala University’s career system, tenure track, gives assistant senior lecturers the right to be considered for promotion to senior lecturer. The university offers support for scientific and pedagogical development, leadership development, and patent and innovation support, among other things.
The Department of Earth Sciences is one of Europe’s most comprehensive earth science departments with approximately 300 employees. Our activities are interdisciplinary and combine natural sciences and technology with social sciences. We have research programs in air, water and landscape science; geophysics; natural resources and sustainable development; mineralogy, petrology and tectonics; paleobiology and wind energy. By studying the history of the Earth, we understand how the planet has developed and how our pursuit of sustainable development can benefit from this knowledge. The position is within the program for air, water and landscape science, LUVAL, which brings together research and education in meteorology, hydrology, environmental analysis and physical geography. See more information about: program for air, water and landscape science .
Job Description: The Assistant Professor will conduct research focused on surface water modelling. Relevant research topics include: hydrological processes at the catchment scale, with a particular focus on surface water and its interaction with both human activities and natural ecosystems; hydrological extremes, such as droughts and floods, and their causes and consequences; and water resources modelling, encompassing both water quantity and water quality.
Job duties:
- Teaching, research and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility and administration as well as supervision of doctoral students. The assistant senior lecturer will teach courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in various degree programs.
- Follow developments within one’s own subject area and other societal developments that are important for the work at the university.
- The research tasks include establishing an innovative research portfolio (with own external funds) in surface water hydrology and interactions with ecosystems and people. For example, the interaction of water with the physical landscape, ecosystems and human activities within the catchment area, and how it is affected by local climate conditions and extremes. The research results are expected to be communicated to other researchers and in dialogue with non-academic actors.
Employment period:
The position of assistant senior lecturer can be held for a maximum of six years. The purpose of an assistant senior lecturer position is to qualify for a teaching position for which higher requirements are set for eligibility. Scientific competence refers to both research merit and the applicant’s potential to contribute to the future development of both research and education. When assessing scientific competence, scientific quality will be taken into account first and foremost. The scope of the research, primarily depth and breadth, will also be given importance. When assessing scientific competence, particular emphasis will be placed on:
- Independence in research, for example by having peer-reviewed articles that are not co-authored by previous doctoral supervisors.
- Documented ability to have conducted high-quality research of relevance to surface water modeling, and to have communicated this at international scientific meetings and through peer-reviewed articles in reputable international journals.
- Obtained competitive external funding in topics relevant to surface water hydrology.
- Breadth and depth of research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed articles and presentations at international scientific meetings.
- Experience working with doctoral students and supervising theses.
- Positions of trust at a local, national or international level, e.g. within a university, scientific journal, scientific society or other scientific organizations.
Pedagogical competence refers to educational and teaching qualifications. When assessing pedagogical competence, pedagogical quality shall be taken into account first and foremost. Scope, both breadth and depth, shall also be given importance.
