Job Appointment:  Full-Time
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri. 8 am – 4:30 pm. An alternate schedule may be available.
Work Location: 6543 N BURLINGTON AVE, PORTLAND, OR 97203. This is a hybrid position allowing for 50% telework.

The City of Portland Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) Compliance Division is seeking an Environmental Technician I to help the Industrial Stormwater team implement their Columbia Slough Source Control Inspection Program. The Industrial Stormwater team works to prevent and minimize pollution in stormwater discharges and control non-stormwater discharges from industrial and commercial businesses. This position works closely with the program’s Environmental Specialist and interacts regularly with the BES Environmental Remediation Division and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. 

What you’ll get to do: 

  • Research and document property operator and onsite drainage information, along with prior BES interactions with industrial and commercial businesses in select Columbia Slough City stormwater outfall basins.
  • Assist with inspecting industrial and commercial businesses to identify environmental concerns and non-compliance associated with stormwater discharges and document inspection findings during and after site inspections.
  • Conduct outreach to regulated businesses regarding their stormwater discharge requirements.
  • Review environmental surveys submitted by businesses to determine the applicability of stormwater discharge regulations.
  • Take meeting notes to capture key discussions, decisions, and action items

To Qualify

  1. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions with limited supervision and work independently to perform thorough and detailed work on multiple tasks concurrently.
  2. Ability to learn and operate a variety of computer software programs to record and gather data, maintain files, and prepare maps, graphics, documents, or reports.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively via phone and email with the business community.
  4. Ability to read and interpret maps, architectural and engineering drawings, construction plans, or other technical materials.
  5. Ability to work with a multicultural workforce, promote an equitable workplace environment, and apply equitable program practices to diverse and complex City services.
