Hiring: Freshwater Campaigner

Employment Terms

● Fixed term for an initial 12 months (likely opportunity for extension) 0.8 or minimum 0.6 full-time equivalent.

● Location: Launceston or Hobart Offices (flexible working available)

● A probation period of two months from commencement date.

● Hourly rate: $38-$45 (depending on experience).

Purpose of Role

Environment Tasmania has created an exciting new role, with multi-year funding, designed to protect the state’s iconic freshwater environments and globally rare freshwater species. Having access to freshwater is vital for nearly all life on land. Environment Tasmania’s Freshwater Campaigner will co-design and deliver a state-wide campaign to improve the management and monitoring of Tasmania’s freshwater environments as well as protection for the unique species that live in the state’s rivers, lakes and wetlands. 

Primary Tasks 

● Co-design and deliver an effective Freshwater Campaign with support and advice from the Senior Management team.

● Produce high-impact campaign materials to boldly illustrate the pressures facing the state’s rivers, lakes and wetlands and work with community groups to amplify key campaign messaging.

● Build relationships with a broad range of stakeholders including members of Tasmania’s Aboriginal Community, fishers, farmers, river keepers, rowers and swimmers to build broad support behind the campaign’s objectives.

● Iconise certain environments and species and lay the foundations for recovery projects alongside local communities and interest groups. ● Undertake advocacy with key decision makers, industry bodies and government.

● Work collaboratively with Environment Tasmania’s allies in Tasmania and across the mainland to deliver reforms at a state and national level.

● Support the development of funding applications and reports to funders in coordination with the relevant staff and/or board member(s).

● Develop and distribute press releases; and pursue media opportunities to raise the profile of this unique campaign.

● As well as any other duties as required by Environment Tasmania.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1. A tertiary qualification in environmental science / law / politics or equivalent experience.

2. Demonstrated knowledge, or the ability to quickly gain knowledge, of the threats facing Tasmania’s surface and ground water environments.

3. Proven experience working on water management or other environmental projects.

4. A high level of communication, liaison and negotiation skills and proven ability to develop effective partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.

5. High level strategic, conceptual, and analytical skills with the proven ability to demonstrate sound judgement, develop innovative solutions and understand the political, social and environmental context in which Environment Tasmania operates. 

6. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and be an effective member of a small team.

Desirable:

1. More than two years’ experience of campaigning for an environmental organisation or similar experience.

2. A strong understanding of water policy, state and federal legislation relating to surface and ground water environments.

3. An understanding of state and federal politics, key decision-makers and a track record of engaging with politicians and industry leaders.

Level of Responsibility and Supervision

Under broad direction from the CEO and ET’s Board the Freshwater Campaigner is expected to work autonomously within a small team of campaigners.
