Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute), established in 2008, is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing practical solutions to tackle a wide range of water, sanitation, hygiene and environmental issues in India and the neighbouring countries. WASH Institute aims to build the capacities of the sector through programs that provide a) training and academic courses, b) technical advisory and consultancy services, and c) grass roots community WASH programs.
WASH Institute provides technical advisory services to central, state, and local governments in both urban and rural areas to support implementation of SBM, JJM, and AMRUT schemes. Our community WASH programs are currently ongoing in 15 locations across 9 states in India. We are a multi-disciplinary team that tackle complex multi-faceted problems of behaviour change, quality of service, and sustainability of WASH interventions. We are looking for experienced professionals to work with us towards our visions of “a world where all the communities have access to safe, protected and sustainable drinking water and sanitation services, with improved hygiene practices”.
Position Overview
The Urban Sanitation Specialist will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing technical expertise, assessments, planning, and implementation support in wastewater and urban sanitation infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct rapid assessments of cities/towns to identify sanitation infrastructure gaps (sewerage, STPs, non-sewered solutions, Fecal Sludge Management).
• Undertake landscape studies on sanitation infrastructure, user practices, service delivery models, and innovations.
• Developing Tool kits, Advisories, SoPs, Guidelines, Templates, Model DPRs and Standard drawings to support practitioners in choosing appropriate mix of interventions and implementing them.
• Liaise with government stakeholders for data collection, knowledge dissemination, and decision-making support.
• Provide technical inputs for capacity building, knowledge management, and communication programs.
• Design, review, and assist in execution of sanitation and wastewater management systems in various urban contexts.
Desired Skills:
• Education: Master’s in civil/environmental engineering or environmental planning
• Experience: 5–15 years in WASH policy, wastewater standards, urban sanitation infrastructure planning, design, and engineering, with experience in Indian government schemes (SBM, AMRUT).
• Strong technical understanding with ability to conduct research, data analysis, and stakeholder consultations to identify gaps, and present possible solution scenarios to support decision makers in sustainable sanitation.
• Familiarity with various used water management techniques and used water treatment technologies
• Proficiency in digital tools such as GIS, SewerCAD, etc.
• Strong analytical and techno-economic problem-solving skills.
• Language: Proficiency in English; Hindi/other regional languages desirable.

• Hands on approach to problem solving and trouble shooting
• Ability to handle challenging situations and train the staff

Salary & Benefits: Compensation will be commensurate with skills and experience.
Placement:
The selected candidate will be on boarded with WASH Institute and posted to work in States Missions/National Ministry to provide Technical Support to Government Departments on Used Water and Faecal Sludge Management.
