Job Title: Monitoring & Evaluation Officer             

Reporting to: Head – Climate Research & Evaluation  

Location:  Chennai, with travel to project sites

Job Purpose: The M&E Officer will support the Head – Climate Research & Evaluation in the design, implementation, and management of robust monitoring and evaluation systems tailored for sanitation projects. This position demands a foundational understanding of M&E principles, including Theory of Change, Results-Based Management, and database creation and maintenance. She/he will proactively support data collection, rigorous analysis, comprehensive reporting, and capacity-building efforts to ensure continuous learning and informed decision-making. A willingness to undertake regular field visits and provide analytical assistance is essential for success in this role.

Specific Responsibilities:

Develop and Manage M&E Systems

  • Help design and manage M&E plans and tools for projects from start to finish.
  • Support assessments like baseline, midterm, and final evaluations.
  • Keep a central database updated to store project data safely and accessibly.

Data Collection, Analysis & Reporting

  • Work with the M&E Specialist to create tools to collect qualitative and quantitative data.
  • Visit project sites to gather and check data to ensure it is accurate and complete.
  • Track how the project is progressing by monitoring indicators and finding areas to improve. Help analyse quantitative data using software like Excel and SPSS and assist qualitative data analysis using appropriate software
  • Support to prepare/compile monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports.

Evaluation and Quality Assurance

  • Assist with planning and carrying out project evaluations and surveys.
  • Document case studies with the support from project team 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Keep good records of all M&E activities to support learning and audits.
  • Do other tasks as directed by the Senior Management Team to support effective M&E and project success.  

Key relationships: Chief Executive, Senior Management Team, Project Team members, Government functionaries, Donors and CSR Partners, Schools, NGO partners, Community leaders, training participants

Educational and Skill Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Public Health, Statistics, Development Studies, or a related field.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in M&E, especially in the non-profit sector.
  • Good understanding of M&E basics like Theory of Change and Results-Based Management.
  • Experience creating data collection tools and collecting data in the field.
  • Comfortable using software like Excel, SPSS, or STATA & open to developing analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Tamil, including report writing.
  • Able to work well under supervision, manage tasks independently and meet deadlines.
  • Willing to travel to field sites for data collection and monitoring.
