Background

Groundwater Relief is seeking a Groundwater Engineer/Hydrogeologist to be seconded into the IOM team for a 3-month duration between January and April 2026.

The secondee would provide technical support to the IOM to implement a new O&M plan for a water supply system at Bentiu town and would also review O&M options for Benitu IDP Camp.

The Bentiu IDP Camp has been operational for around 10 years and is currently home to around 110,000 people who are supplied water through approximately 10 production boreholes. Due to cost reductions the O&M of these services must be reduced and handed over to local staff. Therefore, the existing infrastructure and conditions must be assessed and recommendations made for the O&M in the future.

Scope of Work

Exact details are still be finalised with the IOM and a full scope of works will be shared with interested candidates. Activities are likely to include:
1. Review existing management and governance structures water supply networks in South Sudan
2. Longlist O&M systems that could be adopted for water supply networks at Bentiu IDP camp
3. Support the implementation of an O&M system for new boreholes drilled at Bentiu town.

Skills Required

You must have:
 Previous experience with water wells and water supply networks, either the design or, operation and maintenance of, is essential.
 An understanding of the O&M requirements of a water supply system in impoverished areas i.e. countries or regions with limited existing infrastructure, weak governance, limited technical experience, logistical and financial constraints.
 The ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders to capture key information to support recommendations.
 The ability to formulate and present clearly, both orally and through written form, technical concepts and ideas to non-technical audiences.
 A pragmatic problem solver with desire to find sustainable solutions based on key facts about social, economic limitations and on stakeholder consultation.
 Able to work hard under pressure in challenging environments.

Time Scales

We are seeking a 3-month secondment to the IOM to support with all the activities listed in the scope of works above.
Mobilisation in mid January 2026.

Payment

This is a paid assignment. All costs and expenses will also be covered by GWR.
