A better Blue Economy: understanding and managing the impacts of industrial developments on coastal ecosystems - PhD

University of Adelaide

Adelaide SA, Australia 🇦🇺

The coastal impacts group does research to understand how humans are impacting the unique ecology of coastal areas in southern Australia and ways we can manage and mitigate this. We develop field-based monitoring and ecotoxicology programmes to assess the effects of industrial activities like dredging and port development, water treatment outfalls, energy and resources projects, and fishing and aquaculture. By understanding how pressures like pollution, habitat loss and the introduction of invasive marine species impact on coastal ecosystems we’re looking for ways to not only minimise these impacts but then also pathways to repair and restore systems back to better ecological functioning. Current research opportunities include: 1) impacts of desalination in inverse estuaries; 2) jetties as artificial reefs and ecosystem values provided by ports; and 3) the role of seagrass and other vegetated habitats in managing dredging and contaminated sediments around a coastal smelter.
